You will be able to admire not only the main square of Moscow – the Red Square, not only the Kremlin, but also the magnificent Cathedral of Christ the Savior, the famous Bolshoi theatre, Sparrow Hills with the building of the Russian state university, the picturesque Arbat Street, and many other attractions.
Your Moscow tour guide will pick you up from your hotel, and will provide the detailed explanation about the breathtaking history of Moscow attractions. Such Moscow tours of course would not be complete without a tour of Kremlin along with the most beautiful St. Basil Cathedral, whose onion-shaped domes will have your imagination swimming in an old Russian fairytale. You will have a stroll along the one of the most prestigious areas of Moscow – Arbat Street, which originates from the 15th century. Nowadays there are a number of restaurants, cafes, gift shops, and monuments.
Within a stone’s throw from this street you will find the historic Bolshoi Opera and Ballet Theatre. Originally, it was called the Imperial Bolshoi Theatre which was established in 1825 during the reign of Nicholas I. It is famous for the Tchaikovsky’s ballet premieres – The Nutcracker, Swan Lake, and Sleeping Beauty. All in all, 800 different performances were staged in the Bolshoi theatre. Today, it is not only the biggest opera and ballet theatre in the world but also it has the world’s largest ballet company with nearly 200 dancers.
In front of the theatre you will discover the most fashionable place in Moscow – the TsUM Department Store. We recommend that you visit this luxury store which was designed in the Gothic Revival Style in 1908. Inside you will find approximately 1000 different boutiques with clothes, perfumes, cigars, jewelry as well as a gastronome, a café, a restaurant and champagne bar. Don’t miss this trendy department store and high end shopping.
If you are interested in Soviet mysteries and political intrigues, then your Moscow tour guide will show you the massive building of the KGB Headquarters also known as the Lubyanka. During Soviet Union times it was a governmental structure with the seat of the secret police, called Cheka. In front of it you will find a monument to the Cheka founder – Felix Dzerzhinsky. There are several jokes about the KGB Headquarters, one of them states that it is the tallest structure in Russia, since Siberia can be seen from its basement.
After a short drive, your Moscow tour guide will show you inside the Cathedral of Christ the Savior and tell you the story of its construction which took place not so long ago as this is the second cathedral of this name. The original one was demolished in 1931 by the order of Russian leader – Joseph Stalin who planned to construct a Palace of the Soviets on its place. Despite his orders this plan never came to fruition. Instead, during the reign of Khrushchev this holy place was transformed into the world’s largest open air swimming pool, called Moskva Pool. Only on the 19th of August 2000, during Transfiguration Day, the Cathedral of Christ the Savior was consecrated and opened its doors to the public. Nowadays, it is the main orthodox cathedral of Russia and the tallest orthodox cathedral in the world (103 meters high).
At the end of Moscow sightseeing you will see the whole city from the observation deck on the top of the Sparrow Hills. It is a nice place to take photos and to enjoy the panoramic view to the city, to the Moskva River and Olympic Stadium where 1980 Summer Olympic Games took place. This observation platform is one of the highest spots in Moscow, reaching a height of 220 meters (720ft). Sparrow Hills is also where Russia’s oldest university is – Moscow State University named after Mikhail Lomonosov who founded it in 1755. The main building of the university is the perfect example of Russian art-deco architectural style or “Stalin’s style”. It also claims to be the tallest educational structure in the world.
Your guide will be able to elaborate on these facts as well as many other interesting stories during fascinating Moscow tours around the capital of Russia.
If time permits, your Moscow tour guide will be happy to show you some old subway stations, richly decorated with mosaics, chandeliers, sculptures and bas-reliefs.
